The operation was carried out by flexible impeller pumps with very disappointing results and very high operating costs. The transfer of normal or viscous  products, obviously ,did not generate problems, but as the viscosity raise, difficulty, inefficiencies, and high management costs grew fast. The company reached a level that was no longer sustainable. The increasing viscosity of products generated great discontinuity  of suction flow to the pumps, often causing  destruction of the rubber impellers and mechanical seals of all the pumps available. Viscous and dense fluids = problems.

This is the fact, without any consideration for the long process  pumping times, combined with cleaning, restoring and continuous maintenance time spent for the various pumps involved . The  company technical manager finally decide to  seek a rational solution to solve the issue, he exposed the problem to several pump producers, proposing them a sample of the most difficult viscous product to verify the transferability. No one proposed a solution, 100000 cps are a limit for almost everyone. We made our own tests with our peristaltic pumps. After that we have realized that we could definitely eliminate the high viscosity transfering problems of this company.

The right solution for very viscous and dense fluids.

Now, a peristaltic HCP 50 pump equipped with special accessories has replaced the previous pumps in the suction and transfer operations. Our peristaltic pump is equipped with additional vacuum system and Inverter panel for the management of the speed variation. The possibility to change the speed allows the adaptation of the pumping capacity to the characteristics of most of the less problematic fluids. With the few high viscosity fluids, increased vacuum system allows to obtain the suction efficiency required, needed to work with high viscous products (up to 100000 cps).

The pump capability of realizing a vacuum up to 95% and the ability to keep it stable even with different speeds allows the HCP 50 peristaltic pump to satisfy the customer’s requirements for high viscosity fluids. Low operating cost and effectiveness in operation have consolidated the trust of our customer to our peristaltic pumps. We can expect the introduction of some other machine in future

In this pasta factory every year hundreds of tons of pasta are produced, to obtain such quantities, it has become necessary to introduce efficient and rational modern industrial processes. The use of semi-finished products such as liquid egg and egg products in the production cycle, makes possible to obtain the final product, more easily and with higher quality and safety criteria.

The already-shelled and pasteurized liquid egg from highly specialized suppliers has simplified the production process with great efficiency and very high quality levels. The use of highly specialized ingredients such as liquid egg and egg products ensures required levels of safety and hygiene, considering that egg is the most critical component in the pasta production process. Pasteurized liquid egg is an indispensable aid in a modern pasta production process, it is certainly necessary to treat it with a suitable machine to provide the correct dosage in the pasta production process.

Egg products perfect pumping solution.

For this purpose, a special HCP 15 peristaltic pump was introduced in the process pasta plant, completely made of stainless steel and equipped with a special peristaltic hose that guarantees the sanitary cleaning criteria necessary for this operation. To make a precise dosage possible, the pump is controlled by an inverter that can check the operating parameters for a complete integration into the overall automation of the production plant . However, the peristaltic pump can perform simplified operations even at manual level, with the keyboard controls and the fine adjustment potentiometer included in the basic version of the inverter.

The most important feature of the peristaltic pump is to have no mechanical parts in contact with the delicate product (liquid egg). The liquid egg remains solely in contact with the peristaltic hose making it impossible any contamination. Naturally the peristaltic hose can be sterilized with the most common sanitizing or autoclave processes. Of course the peristaltic pump is entirely made of stainless steel, including the base and support of the inverter, and is equipped with dedicated sanitary fittings. The peristaltic pump came into service in 2015, and is doing its job every day.

Only one is of our interest step, suction and the transfer of honey in order to obtain a product having the qualities required by demanding market. Some typical characteristics of honey complicate things, and make pumping operations  particularly challenghing.

The first in order of importance is the viscosity, honey, even if subjected to a thermal conditioning process necessary for processing, remains a fluid relatively hard to pump. This peculiarity is the greatest difficulties to be overcome if you plan to transfer it by a pump.
The second characteristic of great importance is that honey is a delicate fluid. Due to its delicacy, honey requires appropriate treatment processes and typically “slow”, shaking, centrifugation or mixing at high speed are excluded, penalty the emulsion of the product, which is condition to be carefully avoided.

In the company for the operations of suction and transfer of honey were carried out by a self-priming flexible impeller pumps, which performed their jobs, but always with some complications.

Among the main problems that emerged, there was the poor capacity of prime due to lower the maximum number of revolutions to allow the pump to operate with viscous  and delicate fluids like honey, the absolute necessity to prevent or inhibit the dry run operation to prevent damage to the impeller. The relatively frequent consumption the impeller certainly due to application too to the limit for that pump  type.

Once we have been focused on the customer needs, we proposed a peristaltic pump HCP 25 equipped with mechanical speed variator and reinforced food grade hose.

Practical solution for honey pumping.

With the introduction of the new peristaltic pump in the production line , the problems encountered in the past have disappeared. The pump sucks and transfers easily honey of various origins and viscosity, low rotation speed , anyway adaptable (with the variator) avoids the formation of emulsions. The possible dry run operation is no longer a problem that require attention, the advantage of a better productivity is granted. The cleaning operations are simplified by the fact that it is no longer necessary to remove the pump or partially dismantle it as previously was in the past, the peristaltic pump HCP 25 has no mechanical parts in contact with fluid making impossible the contamination of the pumped product. The long duration of the tubular membrane has not requested so far no replacement.

peristaltic pumps made in stainless steel SS 304 - 316If there is a peculiarity that in principle distinguishes the peristaltic pumps from the others in general, it is the characteristic of being “contactless” This means there is no physical contact between the pumped fluid and the pump’s mechanical organs. The treated fluid remains entirely contained in the peristaltic hose. This peculiarity excludes, in fact, that materials that are compatible with the liquid to be treated must necessarily be used to make the pump as inevitably applies to all other types of pumps, often made in stainless steel.

What is the purpose of a inox peristaltic  pumps, and what advantages are obtained?

Essentially, not many, there are no real practical advantages to make the difference between a common pump and one entirely INOX made . It is possible to make wider and different considerations than the search for a “functional” purpose.
We can consider the environment where the machine is to be applied, the environmental characteristics may still be chemically aggressive, so the pump would suffer “passively” the consequences.
Other environmental conditions require very high cleaning levels, the ability to intervene quickly on machines easily and effectively ensures the sanitary levels required by these situations. Sectors such as food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics are the most common example in which the highest level of direct and indirect cleaning is to be guaranteed. it’s not a casuality in these cases, entire machines and production lines are made using stainless steel in considerable quantities.

Other criteria that may determine the choice of using a stainless steel peristaltic pumps may be more subjective. Sometimes the customer chooses a peristaltic inox pump to make it easy to operate the machine’s normal handling and maintenance process, having the highest resistance to atmospheric or environmental impacts from the pump’s structural components. It is possible to say that a machine made of stainless steel makes it much simpler to perform more intensive and accurate cleaning operations (such as pressure and steam scrubbing) or facilitates the use and handling of the machine in the most extreme environmental cases , characterized by summary and corrective maintenance, or vice versa, very frequent and intense.

Finally, there are good reasons that make the choice to use a completely stainless steel peristaltic pumps substantially mandatory.

Probably blood and slaughter waste aspiration and transfer may seem a trivial aspect in a production process, but working with 200 tonnes of fresh meat, even with the aid of automated systems and very modern technological processes, a small annoyance can also become a more serious problem. And so, this modern company involved in slaughter and processing of meat, had a weak point.

The company has never been able to find a pump that is truly reliable for the suction and transfer of the blood of processing slaughter waste. The two plants of recent introduction were equipped with such pumps. But as always happens, the solutions adopted initially by designers are mainly of economic nature, and in a short time, the user pays the consequences. Find technical correct solution is in charge of final user. The pumps of the first plant lasted an insignificant fraction of time. Were replaced with a pneumatic diaphragm pump. The system improved its efficiency, but often happened a stoppage of the pump due to the blocking of the valve system, due to the input of a solid suspension largest or the formation of blood clots.

This fact imposed disassembly and cleaning of the seats and the valves to restore operation. Great discomfort, given that it is necessary to remove the pump and the pipes in order to perform this operation. The compressed air also has it cost, and on pneumatic pumps, even if the mid-pump size makes itself felt significantly. Sometimes, during priming phase, the diaphragm pump did not work due to the dirt which tends to settle in the seats valve preventing the operation. Ultimately, not big problems, but annoying drawbacks were frequent.

We were asked how to solve the problem, so we proposed a HCP 40 peristaltic pump with small footprint and very compact, in accordance to the requirements of the customer. And on 2014 the peristaltic pump has been installed in a small destination space. Since then, the peristaltic pump makes his daily work, transfering blood and slaughter waste with constancy and reliability, till today, the pump has not requested any spare and no maintenance intervention.
